RH OSP Director allows you to customize your deployment but you might want to add some manual configurations after Director deployment as well. Sometimes you might hit loss of the manual configurations due to scaling out and other reasons and that would cause unexpected issues such as instance failure and network disconnection. In this situation, we can use the hieradata to protect the manual configurations.
